CLIS Annual Conference and AGM 14th April 2018

Today (Saturday 14th April 2018) 18 members of Christians in Library and Information Services (CLIS) met for their Annual Conference and AGM at the Salvation Army Regents Hall in London.

The day started with a time of Worship and Prayer led by Karen Hans, our prayer secretary. The AGM followed chaired by Eddie Olliffe our retiring President. We received an annual report from Robert Foster (Chair) and the 2017 Accounts from our Treasurer, Diana Guthrie.

We then Elected the following Officers:
President: Richard Waller
Life Vice-President: Eddie Olliffe
Publications Editor: Graham Hedges
Membership Secretary: Janice Paine
Scottish Secretary: Anne MacRitchie

The conference followed. The conference theme was “Freedom and Truth” and the speakers were

Mark Jones, on “Gospel Freedom and the Workplace” and Malcolm Martin on “What is Truth? and how do we tell it?”. Both were excellent talks and the transcripts will follow in due course in “Christian Librarian”

Agenda for 2018 AGM on 14th April

Our Annual General Meeting/Annual Conference is fast approaching on Saturday 14 April 2018 at the Regent Hall in London.  Will we see you there?   Please click here for the agenda for the AGM plus a reminder of the conference and booking details.  The conference  theme is “Freedom and Truth” and the speakers are Mark Jones, on “Gospel Freedom and the Workplace” and Malcolm Martin on “What is Truth? and how do we tell it?”

Also included is a reminder of our walking tour of the City of London on Wednesday afternoon 23 May 2018 when we will be visiting places with associations with John Bunyan, William Wilberforce, John Wesley and other notable Christians.

 

 

“Freedom and Truth” is the theme of the Christians in Library and Information Services Conference

Freedom and Truth” is the theme of the Christians in Library and Information Services Conference to be held on Saturday 14 April 2018 at the Regent Hall,  275, Oxford Street, LondonW1C 2DJ, from 10.30. a.m. 

Mark Jones will be speaking on the subject “Gospel Freedom and the Workplace” and will look at how the law impacts Christians at work, in particular the ability to speak openly about their faith.

Malcolm Martin  will be speaking on the subject “What is Truth? – and how do we tell it” and will be addressing some of the issues in the current debates about post-truth and fake news.  His talk will provide  a (very) brief history of fake news from the beginning of humanity to the current date; consider the current dissemination of fake news, with particular reference to the use of social media;  look at the identification of fake news and fake news purveyors and difficulties with these approaches; and  make suggestions on the role of the Christian librarian and information specialist.

Mark Jones is head of employment law at MW solicitors and chairman of the Lawyers’ Christian Fellowship.

Malcolm Martin is a Chartered Surveyor and the deputy leader of the Christian People’s Alliance.  He is passionate about social justice and has stood as a parliamentary candidate for the Lewisham Deptford constituency.  He has been an unpaid church leader in inner city  London for many years.

Founded in 1976, as  the Librarians’ Christian Fellowship, Christians in Library and Information Services  is an association of Christians working in library and information services of all kinds.  CLIS  exists to promote fellowship and unity between Christians involved in library work; to provide a Christian voice within the wider library profession; and to make the skills and training of librarians available to the wider Christian community.
